Our Story

It starts with relationship.

Shore to Shore is first and foremost a youth group: a two-year journey of Christian formation, leadership development, belonging, service and friendship for high-school students.

Young people are coming of age amid anxiety, polarization, social fragmentation and weakened trust. Shore to Shore creates an intentionally different kind of space—one where teenagers can be known, ask meaningful questions, encounter Christ in community and practice leading across difference.

Young people are not only the future of the Church. They are leaders now.

The Journey

Belong. Build relationship. Encounter. Reflect. Lead.

Shore to Shore is built on a simple conviction: sustained friendship across difference, intentionally formed and reflected upon, changes how young people understand themselves, God, their neighbors, and their capacity to lead. International travel is an aspiration of the program—not its condition.

Belong

Belonging comes first. Shared meals, prayer, recreation and retreats create a community where teenagers are known, valued and invited to bring their whole selves.

Build Relationship

Sustained friendship across race, class, geography, culture, nationality, church experience and life circumstance changes perspective.

Encounter

Young people encounter one another’s communities through shared experience and reciprocal hospitality. We offer hospitality in our home country, and we are hosted by our friends in theirs. Each arrives ready both to contribute and to learn.

Reflect

Experience becomes formation through prayer, storytelling, difficult conversations, theological reflection and making meaning together.

Lead

Young people move from participants to leaders—shaping the community, making decisions, telling its story, welcoming others and carrying their agency home.

Transformation travels home.

Young people carry changed expectations about themselves and others into their schools, churches, families, communities, colleges, workplaces and civic lives—growing toward courageous leadership and engaged global citizenship.

Show up. Be real. Stay curious. Practice courage. Walk humbly.

Shore to Shore is serious formation without losing the joy of being a youth group. Retreat games, van rides, meals and friendship belong alongside prayer, theological reflection and leadership practice.

Why South Africa?

Two shores. Different histories. A shared calling.

Shore to Shore does not approach South Africa as a destination to consume or a community to help. We enter relationship with young leaders who are doing the work we hope our own young people will learn to do: build courageous community, seek justice, practice reconciliation and lead with faith.

Why Volmoed?

Volmoed was conceived during apartheid as a place of healing and reconciliation. Its Youth Leadership Training Programme has spent a decade gathering young adults into safe and brave spaces shaped by prayer, leadership, justice, healing, creativity and community.

Its 10th-anniversary theme—“I Call You Friends”—and invitation to move “From Fear to Courageous Community” resonate deeply with Shore to Shore’s own conviction that friendship across difference is part of Christian formation.

We cross the ocean in both directions. We offer hospitality in our home country, and we are hosted by our friends in theirs. We teach, and we learn. We share what is ours, and receive what others choose to share with us.

Reciprocity is at the heart of Shore to Shore. We share our stories, traditions, questions and faith, and receive theirs with curiosity and respect. Neither group is the object of the other’s experience. We meet as friends and fellow leaders, each with something to offer and something to learn.
